Department of Nuclear Engineering

he Department of Nuclear Engineering was established in 1977 to meet the needs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the fields of nuclear energy, radiation safety, and the application of radioactive isotopes in medicine and industry. In 2007, the department introduced two new programs in addition to the main Nuclear Engineering program: the Nuclear Engineering (Medical Physics) program and the Nuclear Engineering (Radiation Protection) program, which helped expand the curriculum and increase the department's appeal. The department focuses on teaching students the applications of nuclear engineering in the fields of energy, industry, medicine, and the environment. It covers topics such as nuclear reactor design, nuclear facility safety, radiation protection, nuclear waste management, and the use of nuclear energy in medicine and industry. It also emphasizes nuclear protection techniques and radiation safety. The department offers academic programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, where students learn to design and operate complex nuclear systems and assess the feasibility of nuclear energy projects. The department also encourages scientific research in areas such as sustainable nuclear energy and environmental protection. The Department of Nuclear Engineering aims to prepare engineers who are capable of addressing the technical and security challenges in the nuclear energy sector and providing innovative solutions that contribute to the safe and sustainable use of nuclear energy.
