Ophthalmology services at King Abdulaziz University Hospital began in 1978, initially as part of the Department of Surgery. In 1990, the ophthalmology unit became an independent department, marking a significant step in its development. In its early years, the department relied on international expertise to provide clinical care and treatment. By 1987, a transformative shift occurred as highly qualified Saudi physicians—trained at leading institutions in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Saudi Arabia began leading the department’s services. This transition elevated the quality of care and strengthened the department’s foundation. Today, the department is home to a distinguished team of consultants specializing in all subspecialities. It is deeply committed to excellence in patient care, medical education, and research, fostering a collaborative and evidence-based environment. With pride in its legacy, the department continues to play a vital role in training future ophthalmologists and promoting eye health awareness within the community.
