The Department of Internal Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, King Abdulaziz University, was established in 1977 and is one of the largest academic and clinical departments within the College. It comprises a distinguished group of faculty members and consultants representing a wide range of Internal Medicine subspecialties, including Cardiology, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Pulmonology, Neurology, Rheumatology, Infectious Diseases, Oncology, Dermatology, and Psychiatry. The Department is guided by a vision of achieving local and regional excellence in medical education, scientific research, and the delivery of high-quality patient care based on scientific evidence and best practices. Its mission is to prepare highly competent medical students and physicians in the field of Internal Medicine while providing the highest standards of quality and patient safety through evidence-based medical practice. To fulfill this vision and mission, the Department delivers comprehensive educational programs for undergraduate and postgraduate students, in addition to training residents and fellows. It also oversees the Saudi Fellowship programs and collaborates with international fellowship programs, including the British and Irish fellowships. The Department provides advanced clinical services through inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, medical consultations, and 24-hour emergency coverage, supported by specialized units and modern facilities that enhance patient care, education, and research. Furthermore, the Department plays a pivotal role in preparing and developing healthcare professionals according to the highest professional standards, while continuously promoting quality improvement and patient safety through evidence-based practice. It also actively contributes to community service through health awareness programs, public health initiatives, and collaboration with healthcare and charitable organizations.
