Department of Microbiology and Clinical Immunology

The Department of Microbiology and Clinical Immunology at the Faculty of Medicine, King Abdulaziz University, is one of the first academic departments established at the faculty since its inception in 1395H/1975M. It plays a pivotal role in medical education, particularly in the teaching and treatment of diseases related to microorganisms and immunity. Initially, the microbiology, pathology, and parasitology departments were merged administratively into one department. However, as the activities of the faculty expanded, these departments were separated and each became an independent entity. The department aims to provide students with comprehensive knowledge about the role of microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, in causing diseases, as well as an understanding of how the immune system combats these infections and regulates immune responses. It also endeavors to offer specialized education in microbiology and clinical immunology, where students learn the latest techniques in diagnosing infectious diseases and understanding the interactions between microorganisms and the immune system. Students are trained to use modern diagnostic methods, such as laboratory tests, immunological assays, and molecular detection technologies. The department focuses on enhancing students' clinical skills through hands-on training in university hospitals, where they deal with real clinical cases related to infections and immune disorders. The department offers integrated academic programs, covering topics such as infectious diseases, autoimmune disorders, immune system disorders, and research related to microorganisms. The department aims to prepare a generation of doctors and researchers capable of addressing the complex health challenges arising from infectious diseases and immune system disorders, contributing to the advancement of healthcare in the Kingdom and supporting scientific research in this vital field.
