Department of Clinical Biochemistry

The Clinical Biochemistry Department at the Faculty of Medicine, King Abdulaziz University, is a key department that significantly advances medical education. It serves as a crucial component in training students to understand the biochemical foundations of diseases and how to diagnose and treat them using advanced laboratory techniques. The department was established with the opening of the Faculty of Medicine in 1975, within the university hospital. In 1987, the departments of Biochemistry and Clinical Chemical Pathology were administratively merged into one, forming the Clinical Biochemistry Department, which has since become a fundamental pillar in the teaching of clinical biochemistry—one of the most essential specialties in modern medicine. The department aims to provide students with in-depth knowledge of clinical biochemistry. Students learn how to analyze biological samples (such as blood, urine, and other bodily fluids) to determine levels of biochemical compounds and diagnose various diseases. This includes studying metabolic processes, proteins, enzymes, hormones, and other biochemical substances that affect the functions of organs and systems in the body.
