About the Department The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, King Abdulaziz University, was established in 1388 AH (1968 ) under the name "Department of English" as the first department in the faculty. Initially, it offered a bachelor's degree in English only. In 1403 AH (1983 ), a French language program was introduced, leading to the department's name change to the "Department of European Languages and Literatures ." Today, the department is a distinguished academic unit that provides specialized education in foreign languages and their literatures, focusing on developing language proficiency and cross-cultural communication skills. The department offers academic programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, preparing graduates for careers in education, translation, international relations, media, and international trade. It also enhances students' intellectual and cultural competencies, fostering global communication. In alignment with the Kingdom's initiatives to strengthen Saudi-Chinese relations, the department introduced a bachelor's program in the Chinese language, prompting a second name change to the "Department of Modern Languages and Literatures ."
