Department of Earth Sciences and Geophysics
The Department of Earth Sciences and Geophysics is one of the academic departments within the Faculty of Mining at King Abdulaziz University. It specializes in the study of Earth sciences and their modern applications in natural resource exploration, as well as understanding the geological and geophysical phenomena and processes that shape the Earth's surface and subsurface. The department is part of the Faculty of Mining's new academic structure, which enhances integration between Earth Sciences, Geophysics, and Mining Engineering, while supporting the Kingdom's efforts to develop the mining sector and sustainably utilize natural resources. The department focuses on applying the principles of physics, mathematics, data analysis, and advanced technologies to investigate the Earth's subsurface through various geophysical methods, including seismic, magnetic, gravity, electrical, and electromagnetic surveys. These techniques are applied in mineral and groundwater exploration, energy resource assessment, engineering and environmental site investigations, and the evaluation of geological hazards and phenomena. The department aims to prepare highly qualified scientific and professional graduates by combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience through academic programs, field training, and specialized laboratories. This enables graduates to apply geological and geophysical technologies in various fields, including exploration, mining, energy, water resources, environmental studies, and engineering investigations. The department also promotes scientific research, innovation, and the development of technological solutions that contribute to community service and meet labor market needs, in alignment with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
