The School of Mines Explores the Latest Scientific Technologies in Geochronology: From the Field to the Laboratory
Conferences and Events
The Vice Deanship of Graduate Studies and Scientific Research at the School of Mines, King Abdulaziz University, organized a scientific lecture entitled “Geochronology: From the Field to the Lab”, delivered by Dr. Ahmed bin Abdullah Reda, Chairman of the Department of Earth Sciences and Geophysics. The lecture was held as part of the scientific lecture series for the 1448 AH academic year, with the attendance of faculty members, male and female students, and individuals interested in Earth sciences.
The lecture highlighted the latest scientific techniques used in determining the geological ages of rocks, including methods for measuring and analyzing radioactive isotope ratios. It also focused on modern isotopic dating techniques, most notably the Rubidium–Strontium (Rb-Sr) system and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS/MS). These techniques offer high precision in age determination and contribute to a better understanding of the geological history of rocks.
The lecture also examined the IsoAge platform and its role in processing isotope data, conducting theoretical analyses, and calculating geological ages. In addition, it presented findings from a joint research project between the School of Mines and the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, which employs artificial intelligence techniques to process and correct isotope data, thereby improving the accuracy of results and enhancing the efficiency of scientific analysis.
This lecture is part of the School of Mines' ongoing efforts to promote scientific research, facilitate the exchange of specialized expertise, and integrate modern analytical technologies with geological applications, supporting the advancement of studies and research in Earth sciences and mining.
