Mining College Hosts Scientific Seminar on Unconventional Resource Development Technologies

The College’s Vice Deanship for Graduate Studies and Scientific Research organized a scientific seminar entitled “Unconventional Resource Development: From Reservoir Challenges to Advanced Extraction Technologies,” presented by Dr. Rayan Khalil. The seminar was held as part of the College’s efforts to promote scientific knowledge and highlight the latest technologies and developments in mining, energy, natural resource exploration, and resource utilization.

The seminar examined unconventional resources and their significant energy potential, alongside the technical challenges associated with their geological characteristics, particularly low permeability and the complexity of reservoir pore systems. These characteristics make their economic development highly dependent on advanced reservoir stimulation techniques aimed at improving recovery efficiency and production rates.

Dr. Rayan Khalil reviewed the key characteristics of unconventional reservoirs, highlighting their complex geological structures and significantly lower permeability compared with conventional reservoirs. He also discussed the challenges associated with recovery rates, particularly in shale oil reservoirs, emphasizing that advanced technologies are essential for transforming these resources into economically viable and investable energy sources.

The seminar also addressed several advanced extraction and reservoir stimulation techniques, including horizontal drilling, hydraulic fracturing, acid stimulation, and thermal fracturing, and their role in enhancing reservoir properties, improving fluid flow, and increasing production efficiency.

The organization of this seminar reflects the Mining College’s commitment to advancing scientific and knowledge-based activities and strengthening the connection between academic education, practical applications, and technological developments in the mining and energy sectors. Such initiatives contribute to enriching the knowledge of students, researchers, and professionals while supporting the College’s efforts to keep pace with the evolving needs of the mining industry and industries associated with natural resources.
