Department of Hydrogeology

The Department of Hydrogeology was established as an independent specialization in the Institute of Applied Geology in 1390 AH /1970/ It began offering graduate programs until 1395 AH (1975 ), when the institute was integrated into King Abdulaziz University. The Department of Geology in the College of Science merged with the Institute of Applied Geology to form the College of Earth Sciences. The Department of Hydrogeology is one of the specialized departments focused on the study of groundwater and surface water sources, analyzing their characteristics, exploration methods, and management strategies. The department aims to prepare qualified scientific personnel capable of addressing water-related challenges by evaluating and sustainably utilizing water resources. The department offers advanced academic programs that include the study of the hydrological cycle, groundwater geology, watershed hydrology, as well as remote sensing techniques, and water resource modeling. It also promotes scientific research to understand the dynamics of water in natural systems and develop innovative solutions for preserving water resources. The department plays a pivotal role in preparing graduates who can work in various fields, such as water resource management in government agencies, environmental and engineering consulting firms, research centers, and contributing to water-related developmental projects. The department aims to support sustainable development and meet the growing water needs in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.
