About the Program

The Department of Periodontology, Faculty of Dentistry, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, offers a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Periodontics. The program was established on 24 Sha'ban 1442 AH (6 April 2021). The M.Sc. in Periodontics is a three-year program that includes clinical training and research in the field of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry. The program combines basic sciences and clinical periodontology within a comprehensive curriculum aimed at preparing clinically competent specialists with a strong scholarly understanding of periodontal and implant therapy in relation to patient care. Upon completion of the program, graduates are awarded a professional clinical certificate and a master's degree.

To be a leading postgraduate program in education, research, and specialized patient care in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at the national and international levels.

To achieve excellence in teaching and learning, scientific research, leadership, and entrepreneurship, and provide distinguished patient care and community service in the field of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry.

Program Goals

1Education: a. To graduate competent periodontists who can diagnose and treat all types of periodontal and dental implant patients by applying evidence-based practice. b. To graduate competent periodontists who can perform academic duties in periodontology and dental implantology. c. To graduate qualified periodontists who can pursue self-sufficiency in this field and meet the needs of the labor market.
2Research and Entrepreneurship: a. To graduate competent periodontists who can think critically, evaluate the scientific literature, and identify gaps in the literature. b. To prepare graduates who can conduct, lead, and teach modern, innovative, and advanced research in the field of periodontology and publish it in refereed journals and specialized conferences. c. To prepare scholars who have the skills to teach, supervise training, share scientific experiences, and disseminate knowledge in the field of specialization. d. To graduate periodontists responsible for professional planning for continuous learning and specialization, and for leading innovative practices that enhance the quality of life for society.
3Community service: a. To graduate periodontists who are health advocates who work to increase community awareness and educate the community on periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions.
4Patient care: a. To graduate periodontists who have the skills of diagnosing and treating patients with all types of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions. b. To graduate periodontists who have the proper communication skills with patients and the health care professionals within the specialty and from various specialties, to provide the best treatment service to the patients.

Learning Outcomes

K1: Recognize the essential sciences related to periodontology and implant dentistry (including biology, anatomy, radiology, epidemiology, microbiology, pharmacology, social-behavior, and oral pathology).
K2: Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of theories, principles, and concepts in periodontology and implant dentistry, including the etiology, pathogenesis, and classification of periodontal diseases, as well as the principles and techniques of dental implantology.
K3: Demonstrate basic and advanced knowledge and techniques in periodontal diagnosis, treatment planning, and conventional and advanced therapeutic interventions, including non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapies, regenerative materials and procedures, and implant placement and restoration.
K4: Develop advanced knowledge and understanding of the research methodology and design in relation to periodontology and implant dentistry.
S1: Apply the knowledge gained to formulate evidence-based patient-centered diagnosis and treatment planning of periodontal and periimplant diseases and conditions.
S2: Demonstrate clinical proficiency in performing basic and multidisciplinary periodontal care using conventional and advanced methods and technology in the field.
S3: Communicate and collaborate effectively with patients, peers, instructors, other health care professionals, and the community.
S4: Demonstrate the ability to teach, supervise, share scientific experiences, and disseminate knowledge in the field of periodontology and dental implantology.
S5: Demonstrate the ability to appraise systematically current evidence in periodontics and conduct a research activity to adopt an evidence-based practice.
V1: Demonstrate high ethical standards when dealing with patient care and research, and ensure the delivery of excellent patient care in adherence with the national standards, responding to community needs.
V2: Demonstrate exemplary leadership and teamwork skills that contribute to a vision of a high-quality health care system and take responsibility and commitment to the discipline by professional planning for life-long learning and development.
