20260412890The Marine Physics Program, part of the Faculty of Marine Sciences at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah City, was established through a decision by the University’s Supreme Council, documented as Decision No. (2) on 6 Rajab 1398 AH, which corresponds to June 12, 1978 AD. This founding decision marked a significant step in advancing marine science education and research in Saudi Arabia. The Department of Marine Physics of the Faculty of Marine Sciences is the only scientific department in the Middle East that aims to study the physical processes of the ocean, including currents, waves, and the interaction between the ocean and atmosphere. This knowledge is crucial for predicting climate change, managing marine ecosystems, and supporting maritime navigation and resource exploration. Students in marine physics develop skills in collecting and analyzing oceanographic data, learning how physical properties like temperature and salinity affect ocean behavior. The field’s interdisciplinary nature integrates physics, mathematics, and computational tools, preparing students for diverse careers in research, environmental management, and industry. One of the most important features of the department is the distinction of its academic members who have graduated with high degrees from the most famous American, European and Indian universities in the fields of marine Physics and ocean sciences. The Department of Marine Physics has made research contributions over the past three decades and has played a major role in the studies of the Red Sea as well as the Arabian Gulf.
The establishment of the program was driven by the growing recognition of the importance of marine studies, particularly given the country’s extensive coastline and rich marine biodiversity. The program aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of marine physics and its applications, addressing critical issues such as marine resource management, environmental conservation, and the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems. Since its inception, the Marine Physics Program has evolved to include a robust curriculum that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical applications. It offers students opportunities for hands-on experience through laboratory work and field studies, preparing them for careers in academia, research, and various marine industries.
