About the Program

The Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering (Radiation Protection) prepares students to protect people, facilities, and the environment from ionizing radiation while enabling the safe use of nuclear and radiation technologies. The program combines engineering fundamentals with focused study in atomic and nuclear principles, radiation interaction with matter, radiation measurements, nuclear electronics, radiobiology, shielding design, rules and regulations, environmental radioactivity, operational radiation protection, and emergency-related elective areas. Students gain quantitative, experimental, and regulatory awareness through laboratory work, specialized measurement courses, summer training, and a senior project, preparing them for radiation safety roles in nuclear, medical, industrial, regulatory, environmental, and research settings.

Mission

To prepare specialized engineering professionals in radiation protection through high-quality undergraduate education that integrates scientific and engineering fundamentals, radiation physics, dosimetry, radiation measurements, shielding design, regulatory practice, safety culture, and professional ethics. This enables graduates to assess radiation risks, design protection measures, monitor radiological environments, solve complex engineering problems, and support the safe and responsible use of nuclear and radiological technologies in service of society and national development.

Program Goals

1Provide students with a strong scientific and engineering foundation in nuclear science, radiation physics, engineering analysis, and radiation interaction with matter.
2Prepare graduates who are capable of measuring, monitoring, analyzing, and evaluating radiation fields using appropriate instruments, dosimetry, data analysis, and engineering judgment.
3Develop students’ ability to design and evaluate radiation protection measures, radiation shielding, operational safety programs, and environmental monitoring.
4Enhance students’ understanding of local and international regulations and standards related to radiation protection, safety culture, regulatory compliance, and emergency preparedness.
5Qualify graduates for professional practice, teamwork, leadership, commitment to professional ethics, and lifelong learning in radiation protection and nuclear and radiological technologies.

Learning Outcomes

Identify, formulate, and solve complex nuclear or radiological engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, mathematics, and computing.
Apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs while considering public health, safety, welfare, environmental, economic, social, regulatory, and sustainability factors.
Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences through written, oral, graphical, and digital forms.
Recognize ethical and professional responsibilities and make informed judgments that consider the impact of nuclear and radiological engineering solutions on society and the environment.
Function effectively as a member or leader of a team that establishes goals, plans tasks, manages responsibilities, and achieves engineering objectives.
Design and conduct appropriate experiments, measurements, and simulations, and analyze data and interpret results using engineering judgment to draw conclusions.

Apply radiation protection engineering principles to design, evaluate, and improve radiation safety programs using dosimetry, radiation detection and measurement, shielding analysis, radiological monitoring, environmental radioactivity assessment, operational safety practices, emergency preparedness, and applicable regulatory requirements.
