The English Language Center was established in 1975 in response to a request from King Abdulaziz University to the British Council, with the goal of offering an English language program for over five hundred students in the faculties of Engineering and Medicine. In 1982, the center became an independent unit under the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, both academically and administratively, expanding to offer thirty specialized curricula to serve nearly two thousand students from various faculties. In 2006, the center was directly linked to the office of the Vice President of the University, and a supervisory committee was formed, chaired by the Vice President including the center director and others. In 2008, the center was renamed the "English Language Institute" to teach English as an academic requirement for preparatory year students.
