| Description | By the end of this course the graduate student should be able to define N2O-O2 inhalation sedation and conscious sedation. The course covers how to use N2O-O2 inhalation sedation and recognise and manage its problems and complications, the armamentarium (mainly the Continuous Flow Unit), the difference between pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics and drug-drug interactions, the different levels of conscious sedation and monitoring, discharge criteria and routes of administration of sedation agents, and the pharmacology of the major chemical classes of sedative-hypnotics. | Description | In this course the postgraduate student conducts independent scientific research in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Students learn to critically review articles related to the research question and recognise current research trends, highlighting strengths and weaknesses and comparing methodology and results, and to write, present and defend the thesis while communicating effectively with supervisors and the examination committee. At the beginning of the second year the student selects one of the research topics in the department's plan; the academic advisor supervises the writing of the research proposal, which is submitted for departmental approval and assignment of supervisors. During the third year the student conducts the research plan, collects and analyses the data, and writes the thesis under supervision. Topics fall within areas of novelty and applicability in the field of OMFS. | ||
