The Department of Biological Sciences is one of the oldest major departments in the Faculty of Science. It offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in three principal disciplines: Zoology, Botany, and Microbiology. A fourth division in Genomics and Biotechnology was established, with studies commencing in the academic year 1430/1431 AH. The department offers approximately 100 credit-based courses and is committed to the continuous development of its academic programs in accordance with national and international standards, ensuring the graduation of qualified students who are well prepared for the labor market in the Kingdom. The department includes a distinguished group of highly qualified faculty members in teaching and scientific research, who make significant contributions to academic and community services. It also ensures the availability of specialized scientific staff, including researchers, experts, and technicians, to keep pace with scientific advancements across various scientific and technological fields. The department places strong emphasis on promoting scientific research through projects led by faculty members and graduate students. It also strengthens collaboration with academic institutions, government agencies, and production centers to address industrial, environmental, and social issues related to biological sciences. The department is equipped with several scientific units that support teaching and research, including an electron microscopy unit outfitted with advanced technologies, specialized research laboratories such as virology and molecular biology labs, in addition to the Biology Museum, the Fish Museum, and the college herbarium. The department also supports distance education and the use of modern technologies in the teaching and learning process.
