The Department of Astronomy and Space Sciences at King Abdulaziz University is one of the earliest specialized departments in this field in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It was established as a key pillar to keep pace with scientific and space advancements and to prepare ambitious generations to lead and advance this discipline. Astronomical studies began in the second semester of 1396 AH as a division within the Department of Physics, where a bachelor’s degree in Astronomy was offered either as a standalone specialization or as a minor. Subsequently, a decision by the Supreme Council of Universities was issued to establish an independent Department of Astronomical Sciences, awarding a bachelor’s degree in Physics/Astronomy. Since 1424 AH, the department has been offering a master’s program, and a doctoral program was launched at the beginning of the first semester of the academic year 1437/1438 AH, in line with the latest academic and research standards in the field of Astronomy and Space Sciences.
