Department of Astronomy and Space

The Department of Astronomy and Space Sciences at King Abdulaziz University is the first of its kind in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It was established as a key foundation to keep pace with scientific and space developments and to prepare generations capable of leading in this vital field. Astronomical studies began in the second semester of 1396 AH as a branch within the Physics Department, granting a bachelor’s degree in Astronomy either as a major or a minor in Physics. Later, the Supreme Council of Universities approved the establishment of an independent Department of Astronomy and Space Sciences, which offers a bachelor’s degree in "Physics/Astronomy." The department aims to provide an excellent education in various branches of astronomy and space sciences, focusing on training students in both fundamental and advanced principles of astronomy and space science. This includes the study of celestial bodies, outer space, galaxies, stars, and planets, as well as the study of cosmic phenomena such as black holes and gravitational waves and the understanding of complex physical systems in the universe. The department also aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to analyze astronomical phenomena at various scales, ranging from astronomical observations to mathematical models and modern techniques in space exploration. The department further emphasizes the application of this knowledge in various fields such as space research, remote sensing technologies, and scientific studies related to planets and cosmic phenomena. It offers academic programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels, where students learn how to apply astronomical and space concepts in areas such as the study of stars and planets, astronomical data analysis, space exploration, and modeling cosmic phenomena. The department also fosters research collaborations with local and international academic and industrial institutions to support the application of space and astronomy sciences in solving complex scientific problems. The Department of Astronomy and Space Sciences endeavors to prepare a generation of scientists and researchers capable of addressing scientific and technical challenges in the fields of astronomy and space, contributing to advancing scientific research and supporting the national economy in space and sustainable development.
