The Department of Petroleum and Sedimentary Geology was established in 1396 AH (1976) and is one of the specialized departments in the College of Earth Sciences at King Abdulaziz University. The department focuses on the geological aspects related to oil, gas, and mineral deposits, studying the geological processes that lead to the formation of oil reservoirs and natural deposits, as well as exploring and evaluating hydrocarbon and mineral resources. The department is equipped with fully operational research and training laboratories, providing the necessary tools to meet the needs of both undergraduate students and researchers. These include a drilling fluids and sample preparation lab, a petrophysical rock measurement lab, sedimentary cover studies, and laboratories for separating sedimentary and fossil components. Additionally, the department has received grants from renowned oil companies such as Halliburton (Landmark program) and Schlumberger (Petrel program), enhancing its capabilities in modeling, evaluating formations, and interpreting seismic sections. The department aims to enhance the technical skills of its students through practical training programs that focus on applying theoretical knowledge to oil and gas exploration and production. It also collaborates with local and international companies on research projects aimed at developing more efficient and sustainable exploration techniques. Through these programs and advanced facilities, the department helps meet the needs of the job market by preparing graduates who are qualified to work in oil and gas exploration and production, geological consulting, and environmental studies related to the oil industry. The department thus supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and contributes to achieving sustainable development.
