Department of Geophysics

The Department of Geophysics was established in 1398 AH (1978) as one of the specialized departments of the Faculty of Earth Sciences at King Abdulaziz University. It serves as a scientific platform focused on studying the physical properties of the Earth to understand geological phenomena and explore natural resources such as minerals, groundwater, oil, and gas. The department relies on the applications of physics, mathematics, and data analysis to study the Earth's subsurface using non-destructive techniques. The department covers various topics, including seismology, geomagnetism, gravity, and acoustic and electrical waves. These fields aim to analyze the Earth's geological structure, identify resource-rich locations, and evaluate the suitability of construction sites. Geophysics extends to direct and indirect applications based on physical measurements conducted on the Earth's surface, within the depths of the land and oceans, or even from the air. The department offers academic programs that combine theoretical education and practical training in areas such as geophysical surveying, seismic data analysis, and gravity and magnetic field measurements. It is equipped with advanced laboratories featuring the latest technologies and provides field training programs to enhance students' practical skills and prepare them for professional careers. The Department of Geophysics plays a vital role in preparing qualified professionals to work in resource exploration, environmental impact studies, geological risk assessments, as well as in engineering and security fields. Through its comprehensive training, the department contributes to sustainable development and meets the demands of the labor market in the Kingdom.
