Course Title: Introduction to Fiction (I)

Credit hours: Two Weekly

 

Course objectives

·                     To introduce students to the nature of literature

·                     To familiarize students with aspects of fictional prose including plot, theme, characterization, setting, method of narration (point of view), and style

·                     To promote students' competence in reading, understanding, and appreciating works of fiction as well as improving their skills of reading and writing in English.

 

Course Requirements and system of Evaluation

5 marks:         Complete reading assignments: students are required to complete a pre-class reading of the assigned text. 

5 marks:         Attendance and participation: Students are required to contribute to class discussion.  They are expected to write a short 'reading log' entry in response to what they read in preparation for class.  They will be encouraged to share these logs in class to instigate class discussion. 

5 marks:         Pop quiz

25 marks:       Mid-term One

20 marks:       Mid-term Two 

40 marks:       Final Exam

Griffith, Kelley. Writing Essays About Literature. New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1990.

A collection of short stories including: "My Bank Account" by S. Leacock, "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin   + "So I Won't Forget" by Will Lozier, "Lispeth" by R. Kipling, and Daisy Miller by Henry James.
