Abstract
:
Pragmatics occupied an important position in modern linguistics as it cares about language relation to speakers and the way through which people produce and understand speech within a certain context besides the effect of such context on the said speech. As the political discourse is deliberately trying to affect the addressees and persuading them with the discourse content especially the addresser directs his care to the aim or objective of discourse, it matches pragmatics in this point because deliberation and benefit are of the principles considered by pragmatics and its main source. The study tackled pragmatics of political discourse in the Umayyad age. The study nature and content demanded to divide it into a preamble and five chapters. The preamble included: the appearance and concept of pragmatics. Chapter One dealt with concept of political discourse, political rhetoric and its flourishing factors, and nature of political discourse in the Umayyad age. Chapter Two: Conversational implicature. Chapter Three: Speech acts. Chapter Four: Presupposition. And Chapter Five: Argumentation. The study concluded several findings including: the Umayyad elocution represented an important argumentative persuasive pragmatic element as caliphs and rulers used it as a tool to prove their political opinions and beliefs. Furthermore, it was an important tool in persuading and affecting addressees as well as urging them to change their position or opinion about a certain case. There was a contrast in classifying speech acts in models of political speeches in the Umayyad age. While assertives and directives dominated speeches, other forms such expressive and rhythms were less. Despite such contrast, all these elements combined to highlight the communicative function of speeches. The study suggests that the speech occasion per se is basic achievement objective through which the speaker tries to reach his aims, express political objectives, and affect the addressee. In addition, pragmatic analysis mechanisms such as conversational implicature, presupposition, speech acts, and argumentation expressed the importance context and its role in expressing the speaker's objectives besides the importance of communication between speech parties.
