Abstract : Recent years have seen an upsurge interest in the synthesis, characterization and analytical applications of novel cyclic and non-cyclic organic compounds containing nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen. This class of compounds and their metal complexes has many applications in biochemistry, pharmaceutical, antimicrobial, antifungal and anti-carcinogenic reagents. Thus, the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of novel derivatives of this class of compounds are of the main importance. The analytical applications of such class of these compounds as selective reagents for the separation, subsequent determination and removal of a series of traces of some toxic metal ions e.g. cadmium (II), mercury (II), lead (II) etc and some oxanions and complexing anions such as cyanide ions present in aqueous media are of great interst for human life. Therefore, the overall work will be focused on the following topics: - Reviewing the chemistry and the different spectroscopic techniques of some mono – and di thio – carbohydrazide and alkyl, acyl derivatives in an attempt to prepare a series of novel class of these compounds with high yield. - Preparation of a series of some new sulfur organic compounds bearing heterocyclic moieties via the interaction between thiocarbohydrazide with various cyclizing agents. This class of compounds can be tested as selective organic reagents for developing novel methods for the separation, subsequent determination and complete removal of a series of trace toxic heavy metal ions, some toxic complex anions e.g. cyanide, and arsenate ions present in treated industrial treated wastewater samples - Application of some of the prepared reagents for the chemical separation employing liquid – liquid and liquid – solid separation techniques. Thus, in this investigation a series of polymer sorbents e.g. polyurethane immobilized or anchored will be used in batch and flow modes employing some novel selective and sensitive sulfur reagents of this class of compounds for complete removal of some selected trace toxic heavy metal ions from aqueous media.
