Abstract : The influence of alkaloid fraction of kola nuts (Gooroo nut) or kola mixture (kola nuts mixed with food) on social behaviour of laboratory male and female mice was studied using video camera. In the first experiment (acute dose) alkaloid fraction of kola nuts was injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) into the experimental animals and twenty min later, social encounter was videotaped for 10 min. It was observed that low dose (2.5 mg/kg) significantly decreased the latency. In the second experiment (chronic dose) kola nuts paste was mixed with food and provided to the animals for 14 consecutive days and twenty min after removal of the food on day 15, social encounter was videotaped for 10 min. The overall results suggest that kola mixtures show no significant difference in influencing social behaviour, except in females treated with low dose (10g food/10g kola paste) of kola mixture which showed significant increase in time spent for displacement.
