King Abdulaziz University has multiple centers of research excellence that support the Kingdom’s Vision2030, KAU’s strategic direction and sustainable development goals SDG’s. These centers provide a niche in which faculty members, full time researchers, highly cited visiting scholars, administrative, laboratory technician, undergraduate and postgraduate students work together to develop innovative research projects and solutions in the area climate and environmental sustainability.

1- Center of Research Excellence in Environmental Studies
King Abdulaziz University has established the Center of Excellence in Environmental Studies with a mission to participate in the achievement of sustainable development through research output and environmental studies in air pollution, water pollution and solid waste treatment, provide laboratory services with high quality and global standard, and contribute to the community through serving it in a civilized manner.
Vision:
Leading and gaining national and international trust and excellence in environmental studies and research within the fields of pollution and sustainable environmental protection.
Mission:
The Center contributes to achieving sustainable development through environmental research and studies in air and water pollution, solid waste treatment, and service provision. In addition to providing high quality laboratory services with global standards and contributes to community service within a civilized vision.

One of the most important challenges facing the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the scarcity of natural water resources, so the government, through Vision 2030, is working to overcome this challenge by making use of every drop of water. This is achieved by sustainable use of water resources in agriculture, industry and other household usage.
Part of the mission of the Water Research Center at King Abdulaziz University is to provide scientific initiatives to solve water problems on the local, national, regional and international level through research, consulting, training and awareness programs in addition to conducting many studies of natural water resources to cover all regions of the Kingdom.

Scope of Service:
• Studying the natural water resources represented in surface water and water subterranean.
• Studying the relationship between rain and torrential rain in order to protect from the dangers of floods and the preservation of water resources with the aim of sustainable development.

3- Center of Research Excellence in Water Desalination Technology
The Center of Excellence in Water Desalination Technology was established at King Abdulaziz University on July 2008, in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education.
The center aligns with KAU’s strategic direction in transforming into a leading research university and the optimal utilization of the university’s scientific and technical capabilities, equipment and laboratories related to desalination technology. Furthermore, the center encourages the utilization of human resources in which there is a wide range of faculty members, graduate students and technicians with expertise in the fields of water desalination technology.
KAU has several scientific departments, Faculties and research centers specialized in areas closely related to water desalination as a Department of Thermal Engineering and Water Desalination Technology, Faculty of Marine Sciences, Faculty of Meteorology, Environment and Agriculture, Water Research Center, and Center of Excellence in Environmental Studies. The university owns laboratories and equipment related to water desalination technology, including an evaporative water desalination plant, reverse osmosis desalination plant, steam generation plant, direct contact heat transfer plant, water treatment and mineral recovery plant, water analysis laboratory, material laboratory, corrosion laboratory, etc. Lastly, KAU owns two land on the Red Sea coast in both Jeddah and Rabigh cities.

• Improving the economics of desalination of sea water by supporting and developing various desalination technologies.

• Contributing to research related to water desalination.
• Establishing training courses in the fields of desalination and related matters.

• Analyzing water samples using the available equipment.
• Consulting in water desalination applications related to desalination and industries related to water and filters.

4- Center of Research Excellence in Climate change
The Center of Excellence in Climate Change specializes in climate change studies in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It aims to develop a climate database for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that can be used to carry out applied studies on climate and its changes. The Center has developed a numerical model for the weather and climate on the Arabian Peninsula, and for its output and outstanding results, the model was included in the comparisons of the outputs of global climate models. Finally, the center's outputs aim to support local and regional policy makers regarding climate change and its adaptation.

Achieving excellence in climate change research locally and regionally.
Mission:
Studying climate changes and their potential effects on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and providing sustainable solutions that meet the needs of decision makers and the society.
Scope of Service:
• Studies of climate modeling and climate change in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia building a database for it.
• Short and long-term climate forecasting using different methods.
• Evaluation of the effects of future climate changes on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
• Evaluation of severe weather phenomena resulting from climate changes in the future.
• Applications of remote sensing techniques in climate studies.
• Studies related to water resources and their management related to climate change.

5- Center of Research Excellence in Renewable Energy and Electrical Power Systems
King Abdulaziz University has established the Center of Research Excellence in Renewable Energy and Electric Power Systems for the purpose of conducting research and qualitative studies within the field of renewable energy and sustainability. The center also provides consultations and solutions to government and private sectors within its scope of service.
In addition to providing the necessary training for technicians, engineers and researchers and contributing to the localization of technology. The center also aims to develop patents and collaboration with industrial companies to develop these patents to make prototypes and converting them into industrial products.
Vision:
Establishing an excellence research center in the field of renewable energy and electric power systems with a high quality national, regional and international research output that contributes to the Kingdom's Vision 2030 in the fields of renewable energy and power systems.
Mission:
A center that contributes to knowledge development and innovation in technologies that ensures sustainable energy savings through research programs in the field of renewable energy and electric power systems and provide technical solutions to Kingdom's sustainable energy requirements.
