 Professor

Profile

I received my educational training at Assiut University, Egypt where I earned a Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences (with honor) in 1984, and a Master of Science (MSc) from the same University in 1988. In 1995, I received my PhD at Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg (Germany) with the grade “magna cum laude”. After a one-year postdoc in Germany at Albert Ludwig University, I joined Suez Canal University (SCU) as an Assistant Professor in 1996. In 1999, I was awarded the renowned US Fulbright Scholarship to stay for one year at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (USA) and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2001. In 2002, I was awarded another international reputable Japanese fellowship for Visiting Professors from the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (J.S.P.S.) to The University of Tokyo (Japan). Between 2004 and 2007, I was Visiting Professor to several US universities including Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD, Oregon State University, University of Michigan and University of Utah. I was promoted to Full Professor at SCU in 2006, where I stayed until 2010. Before leaving SCU to join King Abdulaziz University (KAU), I served as Acting Dean of Faculty of Pharmacy, Vice Dean for Research and Professor at Department of Pharmacognosy at SCU. At SCU, I built a rigorous research program in the area of marine biotechnology, marine natural products and drug discovery, gaining recognition as the founding Chair of the Department of Pharmacognosy. I served as a Principal Investigator of 18 research projects in the area of drug discovery from marine organisms and marine biotechnology. I published about 110 peer-reviewed research papers and gave more than 35 invited lectures in different US, and European universities as well as in international meetings and conferences. I continue to serve as a reviewer for more than 15 international reputable scientific journals in the area of chemistry of natural products, marine biotechnology and drug discovery. In 2003, I received the prestigious “State of Egypt Incentive Award in Medicine”. Currently, I have an h-Index of 24. I have supervised 15 MSc and 7 PhD students. In 2008, I was elected to chair and organize the 1st Euro-Mediterranean Conference on Marine Natural Products in Sharm El-Sheikh (Egypt) and I was reelected to chair and organize the 2nd Euro-Mediterranean Conference on Marine Natural Products in 2010 in Cairo.
The major focus of our research is the discovery and identification of new drugs/drug leads for the treatment of human diseases. My current research support at KAU focuses on the exploitation of the marine organisms from the Saudi Red Sea coast as a possible source for drug discovery and biotechnological applications with special emphasis on marine invertebrates, cyanobacteria, actinomycetes and fungi.
