Dr. Hamdy Hamdan Abdel-Rahman

 Associate Professor

Profile

Dr. Hamdy Hamdan Abdel-Rahman was awarded in 1973 a B.Sc. degree with distinction in Civil Engineering from Assiut University in Egypt. He was then appointed as a demonstrator in the Dept. of Civil Eng. at the same university. In 1978 he was awarded a M.Sc. degree in structural Eng. from Assiut University. In 1979 he was appointed as a Senior Research Assistant at the Dept. of Civil Eng., University of Swansea, Wales, U.K. Having worked on a project commissioned by the Dept. of Transport in U.K. to develop a suite of computer programs for the nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete slab systems used in bridges under the supervision of Prof. O.C. Zienkiewicz and late Prof. E. Hinton; he was awarded a Ph.D. degree in 1982. He was then offered the post of temporary lecturer in the same dept. for one year. In 1983 he landed in Saudi Arabia where he has been working since then. First he joined the Dept. of Civil Eng. at King Fahd University for Petroleum and Minerals in Dhahran as an Assistant Professor for four years. In 1987 he joined the Dept. of Civil Eng. at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah. He was promoted to Associate Prof. in 1989. During the period 1982 to 1992 he taught many undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Structural Engineering. In 1992 he moved to the Dept. of Landscape Architecture where he has been since then teaching a series of courses in Landscape Construction Technology including paving and construction materials, light wood structures and retaining walls, site grading and drainage and vehicular and pedestrian circulation design. He also taught Structure in Architecture courses for the Dept. of Arch. students. He has so far jointly published 14 refereed journal papers and 22 conference papers. His research interests include finite element applications in solid mechanics with emphasis on reinforced concrete structures, construction materials, engineering education and Arabization of engineering sciences. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Egyptian Society of Civil Engineers and a charter member of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE. He served as a member or a chairman in many departmental and college committees. Currently he is the Secretary of the Landscape Architecture Dept. Council, Chairman of Lab. Committee and member of Academic Accreditation and Program Developing Committees.
