Research Interests

My research interests are focused on gut microbiota and their associated impact on health. I focused on determining the impact of Maillard reaction products (MRPs) on the gut microbiome of health and digestive diseases on rodents. The technique that this study used is named high- throughput (MiSeq) sequencing 16S ribosome RNA gene. As for libraries DNA preparation for sequencing, I follow Illumina protocols. 16S amplicon reads are analyzed by using the MOTHUR software package. The results of microbiota counts are analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney pairwise, and Non-Metric Multidimensional scaling (NMDS) using Past3 software. My future goals will be focused on the interaction between microbiota and metabolic diseases.

Scientific interests

I aim to instill in my students an appreciation for the field of biology by using real living creatures in these fields. Also, I would encourage the students to learn the value of the scientific method in advancing science and to develop their own critical-thinking skills by asking questions, writing research, reading articles, and analyzing data. I offer my students the opportunity to exercise their critical-thinking skills in class by having them work in teams to critique scientific papers.

It is important to present class materials in a variety of formats to help ensure the entire class learns the material and to make this material more interesting. For example, I will use lectures, videos, computer exercises, organized notes, diagrams, and current events to present course material. I would informally quiz them at the beginning of class and test them in the beginning and end of the semester in order to determine how well the students are grasping concepts. I would also seek feedback from the students on my teaching performance and then adjust my teaching methods to meet their needs.
