Abstract : The Irish Writer, James Joyce is notorious for his eccentric epic novel, Ulysses. To this day, it continues to be the focal point of numerous controversies in the various critical and literary circles indicating the continuation of its analytical perplexity. On this account, the thesis initiated its analysis from this predicament in an attempt to prove that Joyce, in his narrative work, implemented a solid sociological theory. This hypothesis was the foundation of his strategy in renouncing the literary and linguistic conventions that governed English Literature over the centuries. The complexity of his text gave way to multitudes of misconceptions labeling it as experimentation in literary madness, which is dismissed by this research. Misinterpretations arouse from the dependability of previous investigations on psychoanalysis solely. Here, Ulysses is analyzed in correspondence with Giambattista Vico's, the Italian Sociologist, text: The New Science. The theory, itselff was the inception point of Psychoanalysis and Sigmund Freud's. Consequently, its exclusion led to the dubious analysis of Ulysses. The thesis focuses on pinpointing the principal chaotic elements, or challenges, in the novel that were the cause of debates. It includes the usage of multiple narrators without any transitional elements, unorthodox sentence structure and detailed time -place interaction. They are analyzed in light of Vi co's sociological theory in order to arrive at a comprehensiv'e awareness of its prospective. During this research, it became evident that Joyce's application of Vico's was his unorthodox methodology of expressing a mutual objective that they shared: to formulate a humanistic consciousness that would relieve humanity from the causes of its decadence. The thesis demonstrates that there were both humanitarian and nationalistic motives in the novel including the Irish struggle against the British occupation with its linguistic, literary, religious and social institutions. Joyce considered them the foundation of his countrymen's suffering. He sought, pedagogically, to raise his audience consciousness. This research attempted to substantiate that his text is indeed an intricate work of literary proficiency with firm theoretical foundation. Therefore, a com prehension of Ulysses would lead to an affirmation of Joyce's distinguished craftsmanship, which is indeed a main goal of the thesis.
